VA LUABLE COLLECTION. SYDNEY, Sent. 1. Mitchell Library has received a valuable collection of papers of Captain Matthews Flinders, the explorer, comprising seven volumes in Filnders’ writing including the log and .journal of H.M. Investigator, also Flinders’ private diary from 18(13 to 1 53.1. They contain much interesting information regarding his discoveries, private doings and term captivity. Mauritius volumes were presented by Professor Flinders Petrie, grandson of Flinders, conditional upon Government erecting a statue to Flinders near the library.
A SOLAR Tf.ME PERTH, Sept. L Doctor Campbell announced that Professor Tucker of Lick Observatory, points out the moon is in advance of its orbit, as shown in the nautical almanac. Therefore ho expected the solar eclipse will occur about half a minute earlier than predicted. It is important that observers should he ready to commence operations any instant from twenty-five seconds before almanac times. Ignorance cf file fact might seriously upset the observation.
PANITLNO ENQUIRY. SYDNEY, Aug 31. The City Council adopted the Lord Mayor’s minute censuring four high officer's and regretting the action of the Town Cleric and Deputy Town Clerk in connection with the paint contract, passed in 1913 without the sanction , of the Council suspension. L. A. Taylor, with which Lady Taylor, ex Lady Mayoress is connected, is debarred from tendering any further paint supplies for the Council.

Mr Hughes declines definitely to state whether he is leaving BUudigo, but explained if the area were increased under the redistribution scheme he may .seek a. national stronghold with the object of freeing himself from his own electorate for party services, The “Daily Telegraph suggests that owing to the altered character of Bendigo Mr Hughes is displaying tiniciitv. Another obstacle in bis path is the fact that Arehdnle Parlhill, the Association Secretary, has been nursing a new seat for several months and shows no signs of withdrawing.
