On the grounds that due publicity will he given to the case when it is tried, the publication of accused’s name is prohibited under Section 9 of the Offenders’ Probation Act. This was the decision of two Justices of the. Peace in tile cases in which an official recently employed by a Government Department in Christchurch was charged with having forged Treasury vouchers and receipts for £7. £7. and £8 Lss respectively. Mr R A. Oiitlibert (for accused) in seeking a remand, said lie had asked the Bench to take the unusual course under Section 9 of the Offenders’ Pro liation Act. Ho asked for the non-publication of accused’s name. The reason for the application was that accused’s fathei* had had a serious operation, and the knowledge that the charge was hanging over the head of Ins son would be. a great shock to him. The old man was recovering rapidly. A remand was granted. ' BANKRUPT CHARGED. AUCKLAND, Aug. 31. At the Police Court, Douglas Stuart Wylie, an accountant, was arrested In Sydney charged with failing to provide (fie maintenance ol Ids wife and (hild, and leaving New Zealand while adjudged a bankrupt with part ol the money that ought to lie vested amongst his creditors. He was remanded on hail of £2OO. I lis wile withdrew the charges of failing to maintain.
A FATALITY. HAWERA; August 31. Samuel George Rowley employed by Unworn County Council for about three years, formerly of Levin, while assisting to huild a motor shed in the county yards was levering the roof Into position when a piece of timber broke and struck Rowley oil the head. He was liospitalled. hilt died without, regaining consciousness.
A FIRE. Hastings. August 3i. H. H. Campbell and Sons building and joinery works were burned to the ground early this morning. The first alarm was given at 12.40. The fire was quickly subdued with little damage and a fireman was left in charge. He stayed for over an hour and then left having satisfied himself that everything was right. A second alarm was given at 4.8 a.in., which time the fire had a good hold and when the Brigade arrived the flames had full charge and made a clean sweep of the buildings, including stock and valuable machinery of a total estimated value of £SOOO. The firm estimate their loss at £2.600 insurances on buildings, £IOOO stock and £250. machinery £215 all in New Zealand offices.
HOOKEY. PALMERSTON N.. August 31. Advice has been received that the Secretary of the ATanawatii Hookey Association that the Tfawkes’ Bay challenge for the New Zealnd Hockey Shield is not in order, therefore the match against Afnn.nwntu on Saturday will be for the Shield.
WRECKAGE FOUND. AUCKLAND. August 31. Wreckage is reported to have drifted ashore nil the West Coast about Four nicies south of Kaipara Heads, described as part of the dock of a sailing vessel. The planking is six hv four inch Oregon and does not look as though it had been long in the water. Beams attached to the decking are Fastened with galvanised iron bolts. An iron ringbolt attached to the wreckage hi hardly rusted. A search is being made to ascertain if any more wreckage has come ashore.
