THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.
A I)ksperate Position. The Financial Statement holds out no hope that there will he any substantial revision of taxation this year. The economics which have been effected will but little more than compensate for the automatic yearly increments, and those who believed that every thousand pounds gained by reducing bonuses would enable taxation to be decreased by an equal amount will suffer disappointment. They have not considered that the civil servants are entitled to a yearly increase of salary for which the Treasurer is bound by statute to find the money. We think the position is really desperate.—Mercantile Gazette.
