COASTAL STEAMERS. WELLINGTON, Aug. 29 The owners of the small vessels trading on the New Zealand coast have cited the Merchant Service Guild for an award, affecting the captains and officers of these ships. The minimum monthly rates of pay proposed by the owners are: Under 100 tons: Master, <@S5; mates £2O. From 100 to 150 tons : Masters £27 10s; mates, £2l; second mates, £lB. From 150 to 300 tons: Masters, £29; mates, £22; mates, £l9. From 300 to 600 tons: Masters, £3O; mates, £22; second mates, £l9. Over 600 tons: Masters, £3l 10s ; mates, £23; second mates, £l9 10s. It is also suggested that the working work should be sixty hours.
The Merchant Service Guild has prepared oounter-claims, involving substantial increase on the rates proposed by the owners. The hearing of the dispute by the Conciliation Council has been adjourned, pending finality being reached in the seamen’s case, now before the Arbitration Court.
