AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION. SERIOUS COAL SHORTAGE. WASHINGTON, Aug. 24 The coal situation is now reported to t>e improving, hut there is a shortage of coal waggons on the railways.
Senator Walsli has introduced a resolution in the Senate, authorising the President to take over the mines, and asking for a million dollars appropriation for this purpose. Senator Walsh charged the President and Congress with remaining inactive, and waiting until it is now too late to provent great suffering through the coal shortage. Senator Cummings defended the President, hut he admitted that there would be intense suffering in the New York and New England States this winter.
Hon Mr Hoover, Federal Minister has announced that seventy-five percent of the normal weekly bituminous coal demands will be mined this week, and that the production next week will total seven million tons of coal.
