RACECOPKSE ROUGHS. ! LONDON, Aug 24. Gangs of raeeourse roughs are becoming more active and the: Jockey Club is considering the cancelling of meetings on certain courses. The gangs blackmail bookmakers, demanding money at inch meeting for protection against violence. They await a favourable opportunity to assault, and rob those who refuse. The bookmakers after having a good day are followed, held up and compelled to part with large sums. Successful backers are afraid to use the trains, knowing they are being watched with a view to lieiug robbed on their return homeward. The victims are afraid to inform the police, fearing they will he laid out afterwards. The gangs have been known to wait fur weeks for a favourable chance for such revenue. Conflicts, shooting and stabbing are becoming frequent, caused by one gang operating oil another’s ground.
