A strange case was heard at the Magistrate’s Court to-day, a young man named Joseph Terence Maher being charged with assuming the designation of a police officer and attempting to obtain £lO from a store-keeper. The evidence showed that tho accused, who represented himself as a police sergeant, visited the shop of an old man named John Parry and demanded £lO alleged to have been obtained from a person some days previously, otherwise he would arrest, him. The request was refused. Maher, who denied all knowledge of the transaction, was fined £lO for representing himself as a police officer, and was committed for trial on the second charge. Rail of £IOO was allowed.
MR T. H. STRINGER. NELSON, August 22. Death has removed another old settler in the person of Mr Thomas Hoyle Stringer, who passed away on Sunday at his residence. Bronte Street West, in his 94th. year, after an illness of eleven days, the only illness experienced in his long life. The late Mr Stringer was horn in the Old Country on January 18th., 1829. Mrs Stringer predeceased lier huszand eight years ago. There nre eight sons and daughters. 20 surviving grandchildren, and 12 .great grandchildren.
ALLEGED THEFT. AUCKLAND. August 25. ; At tile Police Court, William Henry Terry was remanded to Gisborne, on a • charge of having, as liquidator of the Gisborne Farmers Co-operative Company. defrauded tile Coy. of £513.
CONSTABLES SHOT AT. WELLINGTON. Aug 25. AYhile two constables were about to serve a warrant upon a Petone resident. Benjamin .Tones, he attacked them with n revolver. He fired four shots, but missed. He was about to fire again, with the revolver close to the constable’s body, when the other knocked it aside. He was arrested on a charge of attempted murder. ! COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. j TAUMARANUT. Aug 25. j At the Magistrate's Court, before : Mr W. Platts. S.M.. Henry Ludwig j Heseheek was charged with wilfully damaging a bridge at Kaitieke, the property of .Tames Steen Hunter. He i was committed to the Supreme Court , at Hamilton for trial. The bridge ; was partially blown up by an explo- ] sivo. j
