THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

Tilk UiiAi.iTY Of The Stringency .Mi- Massey’s admission that £600,000 of income tax payable last February has not yet been collected shows that the strangulation process of the high taxation has pretty well effected its purpose, ns mOst businesses now are in a moribund condition. The farmers, apparently, are in an equally bad way, as land tax to the extent of £300.000 has not been paid, and cannot be paid unless the Government calls in an auctioneer to sell their land, which it will hesitate to do because the defaulters have merely an equity of redemption.
