Tne general committee met at toe
Town Hall at 7.30 o’clock. Present: Mr D. <J. Evans, rice-chairman in the chair; Miss Thompson, Mesd'ames Bennett and Butler; Messrs G. Davidson, ■lrvine, Preston, Wild, Pilkington and Niven (hoii. sec.) Th o formal business was disposed of, apology being made for the absence of Hon. H, Michel, Chairniah, away on parliamentary duties. The Hokitika Borough Council wrote approving the proposed improvements to the eastern side of Cass Squrife, mid agreed to supply pipes and graved.— Received with thanks. The Seereary reported in regard to the extra, work being done on Cass •Square with the assistance of the poppy day fund. The works generally were approved. It was explained that after, consulting Mrs Butler, the Reserves Committee of the Borough Council authorised the removal of the childrens swings and that work had been carried out satisfactorily. It would not bo necessary now to place a fence round the monument as originally proposed, as the area would be laid out in plots and grass. The Secretary stated after discharging tile accounts to be passed that evening there would remain £3O Is 8d in hand sufficient for a fortnight’s wages. It was resolved to appeal for subscriptions and donations, recurring for the second year, and raise additional funds by application to various lmdies. The rate of wages originally fixed, viz. the Borough Council wage, was confirmed.
Tt was intimated that the Salvation Army would lie visiting Hokitika next Saturday evening, and it was resolved to postpone the community singiqg for n fortnight—as the following Saturday night was taken up by Heath and Heather Day for the Burns statue fund. Various arrangements in connection with the next community singing for better control of the rear portion of the hall were resolved upon. ‘ The suggestion to purchase a meehani. cal sweeper for the pathway on Cass Square was approved at a cost of £4, the Borough Council to be asked to bear half the charge. A proposal was put forward tf> set apart the month of October for civic welfare, by asking the residents of the town to co-operate in having the frontage to dwellings etc. cleaned up for the season, the Borough Council to he asked to place drays at disposal for the removal of debris. The idea was generally approved, and it was' resolved to arrange for a campaign at next meeting, the work to be done to inclndo the clearing of overgrowth or noxious weeds, the levelling of frontages between the footpaths and the roadway, and other work ensuring the tidying up of the town. The meeting concluded at 8.25 p.m.
