A BIGAMY CHARGE. GREYMOUTH, August 23. Arthur Ernest Taylor, employed at Denniston pleaded guilty to-day at the Magistrate’s Court to a charge of bigamy in marrying Janet Mary Wylie at Hokitika on October 22nd.. 1920. his wife being then and is still alive. Accused was married first in England in 1907. He was committed for sentence, bail being allowed.
SUPREME COURT. NAPTER, August 23. At the Sureme Court, Justice Stout sentenced Montague Thomas Sabine Pasley of Hastings to seven years reformative treatment, for embezzlement of £472 from the firm of Hadley, Son and Stewart, of which he was accountant. Sir Robert Stout said he understood the total defalcations amounted t-o no less than twelve thousand. Accused had given way to gambling, which was a great curse, ruining hundreds of people in New Zealand. James Doughi, for breaking and entering at Waipnwa, was sentenced to four years reformative treatment.
SLIPS ON MAIN TRUNK LINE. TAIHAPE. August 23. Owing to heavy rain, after a long period of frosty weather, slips have occurred on the main trunk line, causing a stoppage of traffic. On Tuesday afternoon a slip lietween Utiku and Mangaweka caused the 5.20 evening train from Marton to be delayed half an hour. A more, serious stoppage occurred this morning, a mile south of Hihitahi, a slip entirely blocking all through traffic to Auckland. The train arriving at Taihapo at four p.m. from Ohakune ran into a slip and the engine left the rails, hut no damage was observable. The slip is being rnpldly removed and the Auckland express is due at Taihapo at 6.30 a.m. It is ex. pected to get through to Taihapo about one p.m. If rain continues, other slips are likely to occur.
FINED FOR STRIKING. TIMARU, August 23. At the Magistrate’s Court, six slaughtermen at Pa room, were each fined £4 12s 6d in connection with the recent strike.
