[BY TELEGRAMI—-PER PItESS ASSOCIATION] THE RAILWAYS. WELLINGTON, Aug. IS The general effect of if mass of figures presented to tile House by the Minister of Railways to-day to show the financial position of the Department is that during the last fourweekly period traffic continued to decline, but owing to economics there had been a decrease in working expenses compared with revenue of 8.38 per cent. The railways were losing £4770 per day in August, 1921, but the daily loss, including interest payments, now is down to £2753.
The Minister expressed the opinion that his next monthly statement Wohld sho wfurther improvement, though he subsequently -showed from a departmental statement that traffic continues to decline, and that bottom had not been reached, therefore, according to the departmental view, no improvement can yet be expected. The Hon 13. H. Guthrie said lie would give this kind of information regularly to the House so as to show members that, although more facilities were asked fur, and with justification, he was obliged to decline. T.ABOUI? ALLIANCE. WELLTXCifOX, Aug. IS. Some time ago proposals were made for the amalgamation of the Now Zealand Workers’ Union with the Alliance of Labour. No decision was come to, as the parties failed to reach proper negotiations. The question lias not been allowed to lapse, and the alliance has again been approached to sec ii some common understanding can ho reached whereby the two organisations can he of mutual assistance to one another in times of industrial stress. The Alliance of Labour is the largest body of its kind in the Dominion, but the N.Z.W.U. has nisi? a big membership, included in its ranks being shearers and agricultural workers. In the Labour movement it is said that there is felt to be a need for greater industrial unify than exists at present, and the attitude which the executive of the Alliance of Labour will assume towards tlie latest overtures from N.Z.W.U. will he awaited with interest. The alliance so far lias not replied to the communication from the Workers Union asking that the matter of coming to a common working arrangement should receive consideration,^
