PROSECUTION AT LYTTELTOX.
CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. l(i. It is many years since the Lyttelton Court house was so crowded as tins morning, when charges were heard before Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M.. against members of the Lyttelton Club. The charges arose out of a police raid on the Club on July 21. when it was alleged that a quantity of liquor was exposed for sale without a license.
The first case heard was against Thomas Gellety, for selling liquor without being licensed to do so. The police evidence was to the effect that in consequence of certain information, two constables visited the club with a member thereof, and had several drinks, which were paid for with coupons purchased from Gellety, who was acting as barman. Defendant said that during the past ten years the members could buy liquor with coupons. The club purchased the liquor, which was not sold for gain. The amount paid for liquor sweets, soft drinks, etc., was over £BOO n year.
His Worship reserved his decision, and the other cases were adjourned till Atlfjmf 2P;
