Working on the axiom that it is the purchasing power of our products which governs the whole financial position in New Zealand, the Taxation Committee which has just reported to Parliament presents a strong argument in favour of complete cessation of borrowing, excepting for reproductive works. New Zealand’s public debt, apnrt from sinking fund, rose from ninety-nine millions in 1914, to nearly 217 millions this year. The increase in ordinary expenditure by the Government is assessed by the committee at 11)4 per cent in the same period.
