[ Lord Northcliffe was 56 years of age. Director of Propaganda in Enemy Countries and head of the British War Mission, with headquarters at Crewe House, Curzon Street. W. 1. Eldest son of the late Alfred Halrmsworith, barrister-at-law. Founder of the “Daily Mail,” in 1896, and other newspapers; chief proprietor of “The Times.” Contested Portsmouth in Unionist interest. T 895. Created baronet in 1904 and baron in 1905, and viscount in 1917. Promoted an imperial interest in airmanship by offering £IO,OOO for a. flight from London to Manchester in 1906, and £I,OOO for the crossing of the Channel by aeroplane; in 1911 M Beaumont won another prize of £IO,OOO for an aerial flight round Britain. Has developed a large area of Newfoundland for the production of paper. Has travelled over most of the British Empire.]
K PEACEFUL END. (Received this day at 9.50 a.m.) LONDON, August 14Lord Northcliffe had a peaceful death. There will he a funeral service in the Abbey on Thursday. Afterwards the body wjll be buried at St. Marylebone cemetery. Finchley.
