FRIDAY, AUGUST 11th. The Council met at 8 p.m. Present —Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), H. M. Coulson, G. Wood, J. King, R. F. Perham, A. Parkhill, A. G. Pilkington, J'. McGregor and ,J. Lloyd. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. Prom Valuation Department, forwarding valuation of Borough Endowment, Koiterangi.—Received. From T. Condon, surrendering right of occupancy of reserve 494.—Received and cancelled. From Mrs A. Kavanagh offering to rent reserve 494.—Received and accepted. From Department of Health, in connection with the nightsoil contract.— Received; referred to a sub-committee, i From Same asking early attention to , the sewage of the town.—Received; It ’ was resolved to ask the Health Officer , for a scheme for the suggested improve- j ments From Same; re refuse collection and j disposal service.—Received j From 11. From J. Mclntyre (sexton) asking for annual leave.—Received; to bo arranged for. REPORTS. From Treasurer reporting receipts £159 11s 9d ; payments £5Ol 5s 9d; debit balance £213 14s 2d. Accounts amounting to £370 3s 7d were passed for payment. OVERSEER’S REPORT. I beg to submit the following report on work completed during the past month.—Fisherman’s Creek Bridge on thc South Spit Road has been repaired, new stringers, decking and handrails have been renewed, the understructure being in good condition, the bridge should now last for a number of years, a small culvert on the south side of the bridge that collapsed owing to heavy motor traffic has also been repaired. The planking on the Sale St., drain at Wold St. crossing has been repaired with 24mch concrete pipes, one of the pipes that had been in some time was badly crushed and has been replaced by a new line! A box drain has boon put in at the Abattoir.. paddock about 60 feet towards the sea. and three drains have been cut to take off the surface water and will be continued some distance, when time allows. A pipe drain has been put in Bealey St., to take off drainage from the pavilion at Cass Square. Several crossings have been put iu to connect new residences, also water connections. The Sale St. drain on the eastern side of the State School from Hampden to near Park St., has been cleaned out, and gorse cut. Two tops have been made along the pipe line from reservoir to Tvanieri lake and several small leaks attended to and a new grating put in at tho intake. During thc past month we made aliout 1 chain of concrete pipes. Thc usual street cleaning has been attended to and streets gravelled in places.—-Received. From Manager of Abattoirs (Mr ,T. Jarman) reporting there were examined during July, 15 cows, 71 bullocks, 340 sheep, 18 lambs, 9 pigs, 5 calves. Condemned 3 bullocks 2 pigs. Fees for period £63 Is.—Received. RATE ESTIMATES. From Treasurer as follows: T beg to submit herewith for your consideration a stale of rates and sanitary fee required to he struck and levied for the year ending March Hist., 1923. Re General Rate—The maximum Gen. oral Rate that can he levied by tbe Conned is one of 6“d in the £ which > would amount to £1.684. By the attach ed estimates you will see that the sum of £IS26 is required, £3lO of this amount being required for the Free Public Librry. As a Library Rate would only realise £6O, T recommend that i General rate of 6’, he struck and to make up the deficiency of £250 a Lighting Rate of Id in the £ he struck. Re Westland Hospital Hoard's LevyIn view of the fact, that the Levy for Hie current year amounts to £SO7, as against £921. I have pleasure in recommending that the Rato he reduced proportionally namely from Id to 3{d in the £.

Re Special Rate—there has been no material alteration in the Unimproved Value of the Borough for the current year, these rates will he the same as

last year, namely a total of 3d in tbe £. Re Sanitary Fee —To meet the increased allowance of £4B for the year made to the Sanitary Contractor, it will lie necessary to levy a Uniform Annual , Fee of 16s per pan. | I may state that taken as a whole thc rates to he struck and levied for this year will bo Is IJd as against Is Id last year an increase of only £d in the £, plus an increase of 2s per pan, Sanitary Fee.—Received and Estimates adopted. In reply to Air Perham, Air AlcGregor stated repairs to South Hokitika road would be continued as soon as possible. On tho motion of Air King it was resolved to place a street lamp at ,T*llie St. corner. ‘ Thc Council rose at 8.45 p.m.
