It was a luggage train, and the engine had broken down in the tunnel, the ventilation of which has long since been known to bo defective. A passenger train which had followed the train found it stationary, and there was a slight collision. When the driver of the passenger train got down to see why the guard of the train ahead had not put out e xplosive signals to protect it he found five guards, together with the engine driver air l stoker, all dead from suffocation. One other stoker was unconscious and still lives. So dangerous tire the breathing conditions in the tunnel that the passenger train had to run backwards to the oiion air in order to save its inmates from being suffocated. The eight d<-> ' and dying men were found huddled in attitudes of agony at different points along the line towards the mouth of the tunnel. They had collapsed as they tried to struggle out of the poisonous fumes emitted by the two engines of the goods train which were struggling in vain to pull the heavy load up the gradient.
