The chairman, (Air Loree) of the Eastern Railroad Presidents’ Conference declared (that President Harding’s proposal that the men should return to work and the Railway Labour Board decide the questions of seniority, means a complete surrender of the railway executive’s position.
HARDING’S PROPOSAL. WASHINGTON, Aug 8. Mr Jewell states President Harding’s latest settlement proposal constitutes a most uncalled for attempt to help the railroads to .break the strike, and that the Railway Shop Federations will not accept it. STRIKE ENDS. NEW YORK, Aug-6. The Chicago Tramway strikers' (cabled August Ist) have returned to work, accepting a 124 per cent, reduction in wages. INQUIRY PROMISED. NEW YORK, Aug 7. The Mexican Government has protested against the killing of two Mexicans in the Hen-in massacre, supposedly among unidentified dead striker breakers. The United States gave an assurance that while the circumstances trill be investigated, proper representations have been made on the matter to the Governor of Illinois.

Customs officials have decided to permit the entry of o th ecinema “How Kitchener was Be- ' trayed,” the exhibition of which thb British Government has prohibited in England. Tlie Treasury ment held there was nothing improper in the film. The importer, however, was compelled to place a barge bond assuring that the exhibition of the picture will be preceded by a caption declaring it is not historical.
