Court, John Brownlie underviewer at Pukemiro, charged that while examining all parts of working mine lie failed to use a safety lamp. His counsel admitted the breach. Counsel said it had been the practice for years to use naked lights. As soon as notice was served t.f use safety lamps it was complied with. Defendant was fined Cl on each of the two informations. ■ DAYLIGHT BAKING. WELLINGTON. August 7. A deputation of the Bakers’ Union asked the Minister of Labour to introduce legislation regarding daylight linking to enable the Court to deal with the matter. The deputation suggested the prohibition of delivery of bread less than 12 hours old. Mr Anderson replied that the Government was not prepared at present to legislate on the subject. • The question of giving power to the Court was a new aspect which lie would bring before Cabinet. The premises of Christchurch Working Men’s Club were burglariously entered last night, the safe broken open I close on £1UI) taken. The condition of t ><•- Club liar showed the burglars helped themselves generously to cigarettes and liquor refreshments.

A lire occurred this morning m Standard II class room of Waimataita,i school .a detached building. The scholars were outside at the time and saw smoke issuing from the roof and discovered the rafters must have become ignited through a defect in a. stove pipe, leading from a coal healer in the room. The brigade were quickly on the scene and extinguished the outbreak. The damage is estimated at about £2O.
