A number of silvered halfpennies are in circulation in Wellington as shillings. The halfpenny is lightly larger than the shilling, but when thrown down with the King’s head uppermost there is too little difference between the coins for instantaneous detection. On examining both in detail it will he found that there is more lettering round the head ol the halfpenny than on the shilling. From the appearance of one silvered halfpenny it seemed that the bronze coin had been either lightly electroplated or had been treated with some metallic liquid. Many friends in this district will hear with s'licere regret of the death at Christchurch yesterday of Mrs Board, wife of Air Fred Board of the Christchurch “Press.” The deceased had been in failing health for some months past. She wa. s » daughter of the late Air and Airs John Allen of Hampden Street, and was a resident of Hokitika from cliildli : A until she removed with her husband to Christchurch. Deceased leaves a husband and family of three daughters and a son (all married). Airs J. Collins, of Westport and Aliss F. Allen of Hampden Street are sisters and Air 1). Allen of Wellington is a brother. The relatives will have the deep sympathy of a wide circle of friends.

A Westport telegram states that on Friday Air G. G. Aitken, the Rhodes scholar for 1022, was the recipient of a purse containing £ll from the teachers and pupils of the Westport District High School, of which lie has keen a pupil, dux medallist, and teacher. In the evening he was entertained hv citizens at an “At Home” in the Theatre Royal, and made the recipient, through the .Mayor (.Mr Meuzies), of a purse containing over £2lO. The Mayor and Mr Darkness (principal of the school) made speeches, in the course of which they reviewed Mr Aitken’s career as pupil (if the school, teacher, athlete, and footballer, and stated that he admirably • filled the bill •d a Rhodes sOmbir. and should worthily uphold the best traditions ot such scholars. Mr Aitken made an admirable speech in reply. He leaves Westport for Wellington on Monday, and plays for Wellington against Hawke’s Ray. This will he his final football match before leaving for the Old Country to pursue his studies at Oxford. Mr Aitken is a nephew of Mr A. Aitken, Manager of the Rank of X.Z. at Hokitika.
