The element of luck enters sometimes into police work as in other vocations, (soys Thursday’s Auckland “Star”). This was illustrated by a very prompt capture made in the city yesterday. An elderly man'colled at the detective office with a complaint that he had jiist discovered this his Post Office bank look had been stolen early in the month, and that the thief had operated three times on the acoount to the extent of £l3O. Detective Knight, who took the complaint, lent a sympathetic oar, and at once set off with the complainant for the Post Office. While he was waiting at the counter having the matter of any further attempts to operate on the account promptly dealt with, a man came up to the counter and handed in a withdrawal slip for £lO on the very account in question. He was immediately taken in charge, and came before the magistrate this morning on charges relating to illegal operation on tne account to bo. remanded for a week.
A sensation was caused at the com. munity “sing-song” held at the Auckland Town Hall on Wednesday, when tile chairman, the Rev. Jasper Calder, announced that he wished to introduce a visitor who wa s strongly in favour of the retention of the zoo, whose influences might persuade some of the ratepayers to record their votes in the same direction. Amid a breathless and expectant hush, the speaker dived under the table, produced a hamper, and drew from it a tiny cub, which lie held triumphantly in his arm. “I appeal to you to save this from the butcher's knife,” he cried dramatically, “and to give it a nice, comfortable home.” Thunderous applause and laughter greeted the little lion’s appearance (states the New Zealand “Herald”), and when the chairman, in response to a suggestion that it be christened, "enquired. “What shall we call it?” 4000 voices sounded as one in £he instant cry of “Jasper!” A motion that this he done was carried by acclamation and renewed applause, the ceremony being formally carried out with the assistance of the glass of water on the chairman’s table.
