The strike situation in the United States is hanging fire, pending meetings of the Railways Executives and the the strikers. President Harding will probably not take up the coal situation until the railroad strike is settled. Tlie coal production continues to decrease, but it is hoped hat the miners and operators will now consent to a voluntary conference to settle the difficulfise.
K BILL MUST GO THROUGH. WASHINGTON, July 30 Senator McLean, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, declares the Republican leaders are determined to pass the Fordney-MeCumber Tariff Bill before any adjournment is taken ,no matter what delay there may be. He blames the democrats for the slow progress of the Tariff Bill through the Senate. He declares this delay is retarding a return to prospenty • Senator McLean says that 100 Labour Unions have petitioned Congvess to speed the passage of the Bill.
HERRIN MINE FIGHT NEW YORK, July 30. The Bituminous Coal Operators’ Association have made public a report of the National Coal Owners’ Association’s investigation into the Herrin Mine massacre. The report declares the Herrin affray to have been all an organised conspiracy. The rcp°r calls upon the Government of Illinois State to arrest the “conspirators and assassins,” and it says: The safety of every home in the country- will be imperilled if such a. crime goes unP Thfreport appeals to American citiforce official cognisance of an infamous act.”
