Westland A. & P. Association.
ANNUAL AIEKTING
SATURDAY, JULY 29th
The annual meeting was held at 11.45 a.m. There was an attendance of 10 members with, Air L. 11. Morel (President), occupying the chair. The minutes of last annual meeting were read and confirmed.
A number of apologies for absence were made. ANNUAL. REPORT.
In presenting a Balance Sheet, it is customary to give a retrospect of the Association’s doings during the year. The Association practically had been dormant during the latter years of the war, a Show having been held in 191 G. Apart from its connection with the Lime Kiln in Koiterangi, the Association's operations were negligible until early this year when it was galvanized into life again, with the result that a most successful Show was held. This, of course, entailed a considerable amount of work by the Executive Committee, which was of great assistance to me as President, in organisation. In this connection too much praise cannot be given to the Government Officials, as their valuable advice and practical knowledge contributed largely to the success of the Show. Many others rendered splendid service including the -Judges. The public responded liberally with donations towards and in attendance. which was a record. the membership has increased and now stands at 130; tlii s number, however might well be doubled seeing the great advantage of a live association. During the year the Association relinquished the control of the lime kiln which Ims been taken over by a syndicate of settlers. Efforts were made to establish cowtesting, and Air AYillianison lias kindle promised to undertake the testing. During .May. through the energies of the Canterbury Progress League, a Winter School was held in Hokitika and was attended by several settlers who gained valuable information from the lectures which were extended to Kok a tab i during the Winter Show there.
The Association subsequently entertained the lecturers, students, and Afembors of the Progress League at Preston’s Tea Rooms. Ail effort will be made to have the School repeated next year.
Space doc s not permit me to go into all details of the Association’s work, but it will be seen that the Association is a body of great utility if the necessary life is put into it. and its usefulness to the district and settlers is almost unlimited. Alembei's, therefore, are urged to sustain a keen interest, in it and obtain those benefits which are sure to reward their efforts. The balance sheet shoved receipts £2OB Is {ld. payments £'234 8s 2d, leaving a credit, balance of £33 13s 7d with outstanding amounts owing £l3 7s Od.-Received.
The report and balance sheet were adopted. The Retiring -President (Air Alorel) returned thanks for support given during the year, specially mentioning the work n| Mr Dalgliesh.
Air W. A. Jamieson congratulated tile Association on tile successful year, after having laid dormant lor some time. .Much of the success was due to the assistance given by Afessrs Dalgliesh. Scott. Pilkinglon and other town residents. Reference was made Lo the success of the show, and the Winter Show aud Hie Winter School, together with the visit of Messrs Uoekayne and Clayton. '1 he necessity of cow-testing was urged as a vital one. With proper care and attention to culling and proper cultivating of the ground, cows should return up to £3O per cow. He urged the support and co-operation of the Association. the membership standing at 134. If tile district north and south gave that support that the Association deserved the membership should increase four-fold. He thanked members for bis election last year as VicePresident and the assistance given his duty had been a. light one thanks to the excellent work of the President and Executive.
