HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FRIDAY, JULY 28.
The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present: Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), G. H. Blank, J. King, F. McGregor, R. F. Perhnm, H. M. Coulson, A. G. Pinkington, and A. Parkhill. Apologies were made for absence of Messrs Wood and Lloyd. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. Mr McGregor reported ori the request of the School Committee for drainage attention, stating Sale Street drain had been cleaned chit but that in Park Street and Brittan Street there was considerable work necessary. It was resolved to clean out the drain iu Brittan Street as recommended. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Canterbury Progress Leagtie, acknowledging vote of Council with thanks.—Received. From Hokitika Beautifying Association, enclosing proposed improvements near war memorial and suggestion for field drains; asking for 50 loads of gravel for track repairs; also asking Council to consider advisability of removing South African War Memorial at intersection of Weld and Sewell Streets and suggesting Railway Department be asked to bear part of the cost.—Received. After discussion it was resolved on the motion of Mr Coulson, seconded by Mr Perham, that the requests in regard to Cass Square, he granted. In the discussion that took place it was voiced that with the extra traffic that would ensue the Clock Towet 1 would he a danger to traffic. No action was taken in connection therewith. ' From Department of Health, notifying that the charge to Council for contribution to health inspector s ex- ' penses had been increased to £34 per j annum, in view of the present payment ' not covering the actual expense m- ' cu , r od.—Received. The Council (injected tn the increase and stated that if the increase was insisted on then the Council would consider the whole question. . ' : From Land and Income lax Department, Wellington, asking for returns. —Received. From Valuation Department re returns.—Received. . • „ „ From Department of Agricul .u.e, notifving Japanese wirieberry had been declared a noxious weed.— Received. From Westland Sub Union, enclosing £7 5s quota of receipts. —Received with thanks. REPORTS. From Treasurer, reporting receipts £63 2s, payments £137 19s lOd; credit balance £132 19s 10d— Received. The Finance Committee recommended payments amounting to £325 lls 2d Received and adopted. The Free Library Committee reported that aftei‘ conferring with Messrs Lace, Linten and Shannon- they recommended that the slate roof be removed and it be replaced with iron, together with the necessary piping and repairs. Received. A lengthy discussion ellsued in which it was stated a rough estimate of the cost was £250. It was ultimately decided to obtain an estimate for next, meeting. SHELTER SHED. Tenders for the shelter shed at the abattoirs were opened as follows: L. F, Crawford £43 0 0 D. Greaiiey 8 u The lowest tender was accepted. The Council rose at 8.40 p.ffi.-
