Hokitika Beautifying Association
MONDAY, JULY 24. | The monthly meeting of the Association was held at the Town Hall at 7.30 o'clock. Present: Hon IT. L. Michel M.L.O. (President), Mcsdnines Bennett and Butler, Messrs Niven, i Davidson, Boyd, Preston, Richards, I Evans, Wild, and Pilkington. j The Hon Secretary reported in re- I gard to the success of the Community . singing and thanks were accorded to I those who had assisted to make the ' gatherings a success. The report referred to several loads < of sand being placed on Cass Square, and grass seed would he sown at a suitable time. The clearing up had been continued at both Squares and 1 also at the Pioneers’ Memorial. The credit balance in hand at date was C'37 18s od, and several small accounts were passed for payment. ; It was resolved to pencil Saturday, .March 17, for a benefit sports meeting. A plan was submitted by the Care- j taker for improving the eastern side of Cass Square adjacent to the Cenotaph. : ] The plan was approved generally and j forwarded to the Borough Council for ] adoption, the Council to be asked to . supply the field pipes for the drainage ! work involved; also to supply about 50 loads of gravel for levelling the road round the Square, preparatory to tarring same iii the suitable season. It. was resolved to hold another community sing in aid of the funds of the Association on August 2(5, Messrs Lawn, Aldridge and Short to be asked to take charge of the entertainment. The Returned Soldiers’ Association forwarded a cheque for US3 2s (sd, being the town quota for the sale of poppies for expenditure bv tbo Beautifying Association, subject- to the amount being supplemented £ for £ and employment being found for returned soldiers as recommended by the Soldiers’ Association. The offer was accepted with thanks, and Messrs Evans, Niven and Preston were appointed a works committee to carry out the agreement, the Borough rate of wages to be paid. Various works are to be carried out about Cass Square and elsewhere as circumstances warrant. The Chairman referred to the condition and the jxisition of the South African Memorial and said as Stafford Street was to be closed there would be a congestion of traffic in Meld street, necessitating the removal of the Memorial to some other site, while also the structure was in need of interior renovation. It was resolved to suggest to the Borough Council that the matter might lie included in the essential works to be considered by the Railway Department when closing Stafford street, and a fresh site be selected, portion of the cost of removal to be borne bv the Government. Mr Michel hoped when the Memorial was renovated the peal of chiming bells would be replaced. Saturday, November 4th, was fixed as the date for the Paddy’s Market to he held to assist in augmenting the funds of the Association. The Secretary reported that subscriptions for the second year of the, Association were now due. In regard to the proposed plantation of native trees, it was suggested that j portion or the Botanical Reserve might be utilised for that purpose. The mat-j tor was deferred for future consideration. , • i Mrs Hickson wrote tendering her resignation as a member of the Committee, owing to the removal from the district —Received and accepted witli, regret, ami thanks for past efforts on behalf of the Association. The moot in" rose at 8.30 with a volo of thanks to the chair.
