INQUEST VERDICT.
TE KUITI, July 21. At the inqust the evidence showed that when Miss Howartli was discovered by B. Callaghan, a mill hand, a bottle containing eollodiutn was lying nearby. Callaghan was on his way to work at Hangatiki, and was attracted in the darkness by groaning. It is lielicvcil that deceased, being unable to sleep, left early in the morning to walk over a familiar road towards the golf links. Callaghan left the woman to ring up a doctor. She showed wonderful fortitude in spite of shocking injuries to her face. She told Dr Mcßae she had been struck by a train, hut was unable to give further particulars. Probably she had - taken the bottle from her sister’s room, believing it to he sal volatile.
Tho Coroner, Mr R. Somerville found in accordance with the medical testimony that death was due to shock following injuries received as a result of lioing struck by the 6.10 train from Te Ivuiti, no blame !>eing attachable to a nyone.
FOUND DROWNED. TIMARU, July 21
A married woman named McLeod, who had been employed at the Hydro Grand Hotel, Timaru, was found drowned in tho harbour this morning. She hail recently been in a hospital, suffering from depression, when she gave her address as New Brighton.
A FIRE. ATvAROA, July 21. Early this morning a large dwelling at Takainatua owned h.v Mrs Matthew Shepherd and occupied by Mr W. Manson, was totally destroyed hv fire. Mr nnd Mrs M ason were awav in Christchurch at the time. Tlu' house was insured for CIOO and the furniture for €l5O in the South British Office.
THE DAIRYING INDUSTRY. WELLINGTON. July 20.
Representatives of British distributing houses are now interviewing the directors of dairy companies, with re* ferenco to next season’s output of both butter and cheese. Up to the present no straight-out offers to buy or to sell whole outputs arc reported, although a few odd parcels of butter have been brought up to the end of next month, at round about Is 9d per lb, hut no price appears to lie available for shipments beyond that. No cheese, however, has been bought for immediate or future delivery, or for next season. The interviews of tho Home representatives arc, it is understood, to be confined to the discussion of consignments only, the markets being considered still too high to discuss straight out purchases. A large number of North Island dairy companies will hold meetings of directors, next month, to specially consider the disposal of the output, and to decide oil a policy to sell or consign.

James Francis Xollignn, extradited from Adelaide, pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial on a charge of obtaining credit by fraud from four firms, totalling €124 10s 9(1. HOCKEY.
