These fish j have been examined by Air Ayson, Chief rnspeetor of Fisheries, who has ! reported to the Minister of Marine that they ai’e a pair of Atlantic salmon. The large one is a male fish, two feet six inches in length, with fully developed nilt glands, while the otlici is a spent female, two feet one inch in length, which had recently sited her eggs. Mr Ayson has expressed the lielief that' this is the first time on record that Atlantic salmon has been taken on the spawning beds in New Zealand. .He hopes next year to he able to collect ova for distribution to other centres. He says that the fact that two Atlantic salmon have been caught indicates that success has attended the Department’s efforts to acclimatise this valuable food and sporting fish.
