STATE TRAWLERS.
WILT. THEY HAVE ENQUIRY?
SYDNEY, July 19. In the N.S.W. Assembly, Mr Oakes made a statement regarding the State trawling industry. He announced that the losses since the scheme was started in 1915 totalled £143,952. He gave details of the contract for supplying the trawlers with coal over a period of five years, involving an outlay ol £IOO.OOO. A feature of the contract, according to Mr Oakes, was that it was made with a firm unknown ill the coal trade, and continued no provision to meet fluctuations in prices. The reasons given for entering into this contract "ere that it would enable the trawlers to obtain coal cheaper in Sydney tlia-n b> having to go to Newcastle. Mr Dooley supported a demand which the manager of the trawlers had made, for a full public inquiry into the matter.
.Mr Dooley indicated that he was unaware that the contract, which was •made during his term ot office, .had been signed. Cabinet has decided to hold a full and searching inquiry into the State trawling industry.
