1 BY TELEQgAI’U—PER PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAPHY. AVELLINGTON, July 17. One thousand telegrams were exchanged between Auckland and AVellington yesterday by means of tho Alurray system of machine printing telegrams. This, was the first test of the new method between Wellington and Auckland. The AVellington to Christchurch line has been in operation since December, with the utmost satisfaction. There was no confusion yesterday and the experiment was completely satisfactory. Tho machine enables eight messages to be transmitted on a single line at the same time. On the Auckland-AVellington line, each operator ea.ii send forty words a minute, so that, with both ends at full pressure. 320 words a minute are transmitted. The AA’ellington-Christchurch line is at present limited to thirty words per minute. It is intended to link up all the chief centres in this way as soon as possible.

At a meeting of the council of the United Commercial Travellers and AYarehonsemen’s Association of New Zealand, it was reported that the past year’s working of their insurance scheme had been most satisfactory. It was decided to proceed with the publication of a journal to bo known as “The New Zealand Traveller.” Railway matters were considered, and the following resolution was passed: “That this executive is pleased to see that the matter of Railway reform has been seriously taken up by the Government. and anxiously awaits the development of a new policy.

PAKAPOO APPEAL DISMISSED. AVELLINGTON. July Adjudgment was delivered to-day by Air Justice TTosking in the case of All Lyn and others against Thomas Edward Holmes, nn appeal against the decision of the Magistrate on a charge of having been found without lawful excuse in a common gaming house. ' His Honour held that the evidence of the detectives constituted legal evidence that the documents called pnkapoo tickets were such that there was sufficient prima face evidence bef e the Alagistrate to justify him in convicting in this cise. The appeal would he dismissed.
