The professional billiard match between Abotolnnep (N.S.W.) and Stephenson (New Zealand) was won by the former who ran to his points 2,250 with his opponents score at 1.9G7. A ROUGH TRIP. CHRISTCHURCH, July 17. The Mararca did not reach Lyttelton till 7.20 last night, after a protracted trip of I9j hours. Rent-arrow Head was cleared at 12.35 a.m. High seas were running in the Strait and Cape Campbell was not reached until 7.15 a.m. the distance of 33 miles having taken six hours 40 minutes to steam at an average speed of four and three-quarter knots. The Mara run was continually shipping big seas and some later found its way below, without doing any damage. The gale continued until Kaikourn was reached at 12.40 p.m., and after, which the weather began to moderate, "and the vessel made good time for the remainder of the journey. There were about 400 passengers oil hoard .including over 100 members of the “Maid of the Mountains” Company and all had a. most trying time. Captain Irwin stated that the gale was one of the worst he had experienced in I the ferry service. i
MENTAL HOSPITAL CASE. CHRISTCHURCH, Juno 17
At the Christchurch Supreme Court sentence was passed this morning by Mr Justice Adams on John Leonard, convicted of intercourse with his wife while the latter was a patient at Sunnysidj* Mental Asylum. ‘Leonard was convicted on November 10, when the jury made a strong recommendation to mercy as they believed the act was committed through ignorance of the law. During, the hearing a question was raised as to whether a husband is liable in such an instance and a ease was stated for the opinion of the Appeal Court, which in May affirmed the conviction. His Honour to-day said that the case was very unusual, even tlie Appeal Court was not entirely in agreement. In view of all the circumstances, he ordered Leonard to he detained in custody till the rising of the Court. THE WATER,SIDKRS. CHRISTCHURCH, July 17. The hearing of the dispute between the waterside workers and the shipping companies was continued in the Arbitration'Court to-day, when the ease in connection with the Lyttelton Union was taken. After hearing some evidence, the proceedings were adjourned to Wellington. Mr Roberts (Secretary of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Federation) said that he thought the Wellington case should lie completed before the remainder of the Lyttelton case was taken. Mr Sffiith (for employers) objected to this course. The W angnnui ease will he taken on j July 26, and the Wellington ease M ill lie resumed on August 28. FIRE ON SOUTHGATE. WELLINGTON, July 17. The Secretary of the General Lost, Office announces the receipt to-night by radio at Wellington of the following message from the steamer South Cate via Chathams Mud: “9.10 p.m., made distress call at 4.40 p.m. Greenwich mean time yesterday that cargo and hunkers were on fire. Tlie fire is now under control and all are well. Noon, position is approximately laliture 45.25 south, and longitude 145.50, west.” j
BARRING MIT.ITARY DEFAULTERS DUNEDIN, July 17, At a meeting of delegates of tlic Otago Rugby Union \va,s held to-night to consider a resolution from the District Council of the R.S.A. that a military defaulters should he debarred from playing Rugby football or athletic games. It was decided by the Rugby Union to uphold the resolution and further that all those defaulters he -debarred from playing football for ten years from date. The..voting was. 27 .to 4.
