SPECIAL TO GUARDIAN. ; ! s COMMISSIONER OF CROWN LANDS WELLINGTON, July 15 The ‘‘Post” announces that Mr T. Brook has been appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands for Wellington, and that Mr R. S. Galbraith goes to Southland. lION H. L. MICHEL. In the Legislative Council on the Ad-dress-in-Replv, Hon 11. L. Michel agreed with Hon Tiiggs in regard to defence. He said it would not he good j or proper to clear out the Department. Coming to economic matters he said it was satisfactory to know that during the first five months of the year, the exports had exceeded the imports by over £8,000,000 sterling. The cut in the- Public Service was -not such a hardship as many imagined. Some economy had to be 'effected for there wire many burdens imposed on the Government by the war and epidemic. It was a matter for congratulation that the Government lint! declined to agree to the affiliation of the Post- and Telegraph employees with the Federation if Labour. If it had done so, it would have forfeited the confidence of the p opie. Proportional representation would lie 110 improvement of the present system. The first pttst the post was an age old axiom. Referring to ' preference to Unionists he said while employees as a lido would rather deal ' with organised labour than disorganized labour, the workers must recognise that preferer-e tu unionism gave them an enormous advantage. They should abide by the ruling of the Arbitration C nrt in a dispute, instead of allowing i- responsible members of Unions to la id up important industries.
