The inquiry into the Mnngabao tragedy on July 3rd was resumed to-day. " John Hiirrell, (Assistant Engineer) said when lie arrived at the tunnel lie saw the lan was not working and saw arrangements being made to start the fan. He has never heard complaints about the ventilation. He said it was about a quarter to seven on Sunday evening that the large keros no engine in the tunnel stopped win king. I lie Overseer bad informed him after the accident. Witness had heard before* that some men had headaches aftei working in the tunnel, lie was told earlier on Sunday evening that the kerosene engine bad stopped ami that aman had been sent to tell the men to com out and to start the fan before going baik. Witness described tbo system for ventilating. Herbert Edward K.inzett, tunnel foreman, gave evidence that when hewent on about mid-night, be was told that something was wrong. He g"t Ins lamp and went into the tunnel and met Triggs coming out. He was told that a number of no n w ere gassed inside. Witness went on .and found both Bjrss, Miller and one ol tbo Graham s. At a meeting of the general eommitteo of the IVarsim Blind Memorial Fund, it was staled tint £1550 was in band and £2o') hail been sent direct to the* iVow Zeaf'nd committee. .Mr Clutha Mnekeiijue M.P., attended, and said that a "very liberal res pc use bad been made by all localities. Of the £45,000 required, almost £25.000 was already in hand. Tin* establishment of the L’earsou Fund would enable blind people, who under present conditions could not lie assisted, to obtain such training as would in tiun* make them independent and useful members of IV community.
