ninety mile beach
Mr F. AY. Manton, representing a gold dredging syndicate, waited on the, Ellesmere County Council, at its monthly meeting, and asked permission 1 dred"u the beach in front of the BenclicroftT estate. Samples of the sand had been sent to Thames, West Coast ami Ballarat, and the assays had been very good, lie said. Tho company would put up a wall t ; o safeguard Hie road and property. This would l>e neecssary in order to protect the company’s own dredges'. IX-wlopmental work would give relief to many unemployed. The 'chairman (Cr. J. Cunningham) commented that once the works of Nature were interfered with no’one could toll what would happen. The beach was already giving a lot of trouble. Mr Manton replied that the company 'could not go on if Hie water came through. It had spent about £IOOO up to the present. There was no claim on the AA r est Coast where the concentrates, gold, and silver values were so rich. It was probable that the gold came from a reef breaking up at sea. The assays worked out at 3s
per yard. Cr. .T. C. Free gave notice to move that a previous motion opposing the granting of a license lie rescinded, provided that the company guaranteed to leave all culverts, creeks and outlets in good order.
