Machinery Inspection.

TO BE MORE FREQUENT.

[by TELEGRAPH —PER PRESS ASSOCIATION j

AVELLINGTON, July 8

It is now the wish of the -Marine Department to shorten the period that elapses between inspection of boilers and machinery conducted under the inspection flf Machinery Act, 1908, and amendments, and the subsequent issue of certificates and payment of fees. The Hon. J. G. Anderson, Minister of Marine, invites the co-operation of owners of boilers and machinery to enable the department to fully accomplish its aim. lie states:—The fee is being reduced to encourage such co-operation, provided it is paid and the certificate in respect thereof is taken uj> within one month after the date of notice that the certificate is ready for issue. The penalty clauses of the Act provide: (a) A fine not exceeding £IOO where an owner works or uses a boiled or machinery in respect of which a certificate is not in force, (b) A fine not exceeding £2O where an owner fails to koi-ip a certificate available at all reasonable times for inspection by all persons working at or with the boiler or machinery, and also by the inspector and all members of the Police Force.

“ AY hi Ist Hie department has no wish to invoke tho aid of these penalty clauses, and will not attempt to do so under reasonable circumstances, it seems desirable to point out for tho general information of interested parties that, as promptness in settlement is now specially subsidised by the department by way of reduced ices, it is only just to expect owners to obviate any avoidable delays in settlement. The secretary of the department on receipt of an application, will supply full information on the subject to any owner to whom the requirements of the Act may not he quite clear.”
