THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

Tilt: Uses Of Latin. Latin provides what is not to he found in the literature of any other tongue. It contains everything which served for centuries to educate successive generations of riders. It is the nearest approach to a universal language that the world has ever known. Right through the middle ages it was the medium of international communication ; every educated mini could speak Latin, and the curse of liabel inflicted Europe far less four hundred years ago than it does to-day. Latin was the general, solvent. The philosopher, the publicist, the diplomat, the theologian, the scholar, for long used Latin to convey their thoughts, and in ninny cases derived their ideas from Latin authorities. It was nothing but the diffusion of Latin which saved Europe from intellectual stagnation during the dark ages, and when the language has been so intimately bound no with the development of western civilisation, it is not surprising that it should still attract the student, whether his aim ho pleasure or instruction, or both.
