OVERSEER’S MONTHLY' REPORT. SOUTHERN RIDING. Petersen Road Extension.—The formation is completed to peg 45 chains of Mr Maefarlano’s survey, and links up with the formation completed some years since. Ton chains of metalling, are completed, and several pits chared and stripped in readiness to obtain metal for gravelling the swampy portion. Rails and trucks will he put on the. work as soon as possible. La Fontaine Creek Clearing.- This work is ill' progress and the .scrub and timber has been cleared for eight feet in width fnom both hanks and 110 cubic yards of gravel removed from tlie bed of the creek at the. first fall.
Lower Kakapotahi Bridge, County Loan Vote.—This work has progressed fairly well. The whole of the timber is in position hut some portions are not secured with the iron work yet. A good-deal of the formation and metalling is also completed, and the bridge and approaches should be completed during July.
Lower Kakapotahi bridge protection.—All strandard timber has been removed from the diversion channel, also stone etc., and a small flood is required to scour the channel deeper along the south bank. At present the whole of the river water is diverted in to the new channel and good results are anticipated from the work performed. The eroded hank above the northern abutment of the bridge has been proteted from further damage by the construction of stone work for hall a chain in length along the hank, of the stream. -
CENTRAL BIDING. Kokatahi Bridge repairs £ for .£ are progressing slowly. A good deal of temporary supporting work has to lie performed during the month. NORTHERN RIDING. Malfroy’s bridge repairs £ for grant.—This work is proceeding exceptionally well, only two men being employed owing to the shortage of timber supplies, but the most urgent repairshould he completed during next month.
Arahnra. to Awntunn Road. £2l) balance of grant.—The clouring was extended 450 links, and the formation for three, and three quarter chains, the work absorbing the balance remaining from the grant. COUNTY WORKB. Repairs were affected to decking o-u AVaimea Bridge. Awntunn Hoad, and drain cleaned out ton chains in length oil Cliestcrlicld Road, approach to Stafford Footbridge repaired, a drain cleaned and two box culverts constructed in Waimra; Arahnra Valley Hoad was horse raked and a quantity of stone broken hv the Roadman, and had holes repaired on One Mile and Tlavill's Road. Watcriahlrs were also cleared and scrub cut from the roadside on Blue Spur-lJumphrcys Road, a. new trestle constructed under a subsiding bridge on Spencer Road, and a broken stringer removed and replaced in Palmer's Creek footbridge; Kumara Junc-
tion Road was cleared and repaired, and had holes repaired on Larrikinsl.(’o).line mad. CENTRAL RIDING. Lake ivanieri Road was repaired
with stone and gravel in various places between Coal Creek, and Lake Road jm.Ki..ion. and gravel pits cleared and stripped at Coal and Stripling Crook, Lake Ivanieri road. Lower Kokatahi road was repaired with gravel and stone broken, and the road kept in order by the list of horse drag between Graham’s Hotel and Knnieri township. Portions of lvoiterangi road between the Hatchery and Cropp’s Road were repaired with gravel and stone broken; the covering o! a culvert on Cropp’s Road renewed, also a defective

and carted over the swampy portion which was repaired for one mile in
length. The renewal of faulty decking j was attended to oil Aluniripal Road , Bridges, and repairs alfeeted to two faulty culverts on McArthur Road; j drains cleared on Cnmelbaek Road. ! very bad holes repaired with gravel on .Hokitika Flat Rond, and stranded timber removed from the piers of Hiedrielv’s Creek Bridge. Alnx Road was raked in and a culvert repaired on Upper Kokatahi to Doughby Road. Urgent repairs efi'ec led to a damaged culvert past Bladier’s Road, and holes patched with gravel on Upper Knk'ntahi Road. A new gravel pit was opened on Robinson Road, the old-pit being destroyed by the Hood water from Robinson Read, outlet drain; a culvert j was also constructed over the drain on j the approach road to the pit. Portions of the upper part of llau Han road, wlieh were becoming badly over- j grown were clean'd of gurse, and water tables cleaned out on the two hills, j Watertnblcs wore also cleaned and scrub cut from Blue Spur Hill beyond Blue Spur; and two pits striplied. stone broken, and water-tables cleaned on Hokitikn-Hau Han Road. WORKS REQUIRED.
Hokitika-Ila.u llau Road requires the side growth removed from the road by the grader on Raeoeourse Flat and Brocklehiirst’s Flat, also Racecourse Flat and portions of the hill repaired with gravel. About four days workwit li tin' motor lorry will he necessary as the traffic is through to the clay in a good many places. Arahura River Track requires repairing and slip removing at the hind', cost £1 IDs. Portions of Aralmrai Valley and One Mile requires cleaning with grader, and repairing with gravel. Gillum’s Gully Road will he attended to hy the Roadman, who will break metal in the ruts, commencing on July,3rd.
