At the Princess Theatre on Tuesday, August Ist. Mr H. McLean is tendering a picture benefit to the Robert Burns Memorial fund to assist in defraying the cost of the monument to be erect'd on Cass Square. During this week an appeal will be made through the press for local jind district contributions to the fund, and it is anticipated there will be a worthy general response.
Mr‘James Leitch, formerly manager of the Black ball Coal Company, died suddenly at his residence, North •Street, Marrickvillc, Sydney, on Friday night. Deceased, who was 7.5 years of age, was for many years manager of the Blackball Coal Co., at Greymouth. lie was later at Christchurch, and eventually settled at Sydney. He was a keen howler, and was a member of the Greymouth Bowling Club during his residence in the town. He leaves two sons: Mr W. Leitch, manager of the Avoca Coal Co, and Mr J. The Chairman of the Hokitika School Committee sprang a surprise on the lion. Secretary, Mr S. J. Preston, last evening, when at the conclusion of tile meeting Mr W. H. Shannon stated that the members recognising the large amount of valuable work done on behalf of the School Committee by Air Preston, they desired to show their keen appreciation of same and asked him to accept a handsome fountain pen as a tangible expression of their good wi.i. Mr Preston who was taken entirely by surprise said lie deeply appreciated the kind words of the Chairman, but lie did not desire any such recognition. He was glad to do what lie could to advance the interests of the school and such services were given freely. He was glad to know that they were appreciated.
A happy function took place hist Sunday when the members of >St Mary’s Choir met to farewell Mr A\ . Hannan of the railway department, who lias been transferred to Greymouth. Mr F. Groufsky made the presentation (a gold-mounted fountain pen and in the course of his remarks referred in eulogistic terms to All' Hannan’s connection with the Choir, and mentioned in terms of praise his interest in all matters that made for the welfare of the Church. He spoke also of Air Hannan’s interest in the advancement of the town and their guest’s enthusiasm where the national game was concerned. Messrs G. Wormingtoii, W. Stopforth and Miss Al. Dee made supplementary references to their guest’s very excellent qualities and wished him success and usefulness in his new home, hut regretted hi.s departure from amongst them. Air Hannan thanked the members for their useful present and he felt his departure from Hokitika very keenly, where lie had made so many sincere friends.
The magnificent mountain panorama w-lik-li is to lie seen from 1to!,-iliUn has been intensified in beauty of late as the snow-capped peaks have taken oil their, their extra covering of winter snow. For several weeks past, .the mountain range has presented a jvonderful sight, and visitors to Hokitika, have enjoyed the spectacle to the full. A visitor from Greymoutli yesterday remarked oif the surpassing beauty of the scene ami doubted if any more splendid sight could ho witnessed anywhere under such comfortable conditions as obtain in Hokitika, in full, bright sunshine, free from the gorge winds. The visitor hardly wondered at Hokitika people being proud of their town a,nd its enviable situation which gave it advantages surpassed by few places in the Dominion. The mountain panorama is a far .stretching one. and is made particularly notable by the dominating peaks'of Cook and Tasman, nestling in the distance. In the bright, genial sunlight which has prevailed so much here of late, the mountain view is most a Crest in/. The snow-white peaks towering above the wooded foot-hills in their range of green verdure make a delightful contrast. Each evening as the sun sets the view is heightened hv tin, wonderful coloring which is always in gorgeous tones, and ever beautiful. Certainly. Hokitika has a charming situation and a fortunate place in its pleasant geographical position.
