Says a Christchurch paper:—Mrs W. G. Roberts, who went over to Hokitika recently to establish there a branch of the Mothers’ Union, lias returned to Christchurch. She successfully formed the branch though the membership was not large to begin with, and gave several lectures <>n socalled hygiene to girls. These lectures were well attended, and were the first to be given on the Coast.

A telegram from Wellington states that members of the Land Board expressed their regret yesterday at the resignation of Mr H. McClure as Commissioner of Crown Lands, and spoke highly of his work. One member said that the soldiers in the district should he thankful for the energy and hard work Mr McClure had put in on their behalf. This was endorsed by another member, who said that the sbldiors were extremely fortunate in having n Minister, a Commissioner, and a. Board who had done their utmost for them. Mr McClure had never lost an opportunity of bettering the settlements, and had never spared himself. All- McClure, in replying, said his duties had been onerous, hut it was a labour of love.

At the Town Hall community singing on Saturday night, just before the singing of “Auld I ang Sync” Afr Evans stated the well-known words of the popular melody which was sung by one and all. all around the world, were composed hv Hubert Burns, the Scotch poet, and master of the old songs so popular everywhere. It was intended to appeal shortly for funds to place a monument of Hubert Burns in Cass Square to assist in improving the appearance of the grounds, and paving a tribute to the great song writer. When the appeal was made. Mr Evans hoped there would lie a worthy response, for all delighted in the songs of Burns, and it would he sonic small way of showing appreciation for the nersonal pleasure derived from the song writer’s works. Tim hearty manner in which “Auld f ang Syne” was sung later showed that the audience were all specially familiar with the words of the master of popular song.
