STRONG AMERICAN FEELING

I ' A careful, independent inquiry indicates a. majority of the murdered Herrin strike breakers and also a majority , °of the attacking mob are not foreign, j but American born. The extraordinary j apathy of the local authorities .and absolute silence of eye witnesses or participators in the massacre regarding the identity of the leaders and personal of the mob frustrate official and other efforts to pin l'esponsibiliy on any particular faction. Herrin district lias a comparatively small foreign element, who doubtless was represented in the mob but the majority are Americans of the usual mining class. They continue to smile cynically over the affair statj ing they <io not regret that the strike i breakers got what they deserved. r J "c j laxity of local officials who are making l little effort to bring the murderers to j justice, is causing increasing indigna- ' tion all over the country.
