WESTLAND SUB-UNION.
A meeting of the recently appointed Judicial Committee was lield last ing. Present—Messrs F. McGregor (Chair), A. W. Yarrall, C. Sellers, L. Michel, A. E. Benjamin and E. AV. Beenan (Secretary). Two matters were referred to tlie Committee to he dealt with. The first ease was a, matter arising out of the Hari Hari-Unite<l senior match on Cass Square on Saturday Juno 17th. the referee (Mr Gillooly) reporting having cautioned McMannawny of the United Clul> for unnecessary rough play. Mr Gillooly stated that when a Hari ITari player had the ball McMannawny in tackling him went for the player under the chin with his two hands his knee striking him in the stomach, with the result that tho player went down with unnecessary force and was knocked out. McMannawny in the course of an explanation stated the player had been feint passing and h went at him high to smother the pass, hut did not succeed. He always tackled hard and this instance did so, but he held it was a legitimate tackle and that he did no wrong.
In answer to a question Mr Gilloolv said ho could not say that it was an intention to injure the player but he thought the manner of tho tackle was not warranted and was unduly rough. Tiro Committee after consideration resolved that having heard tlie referees’ report and the explanation by MeMannaway considered that the caution was warranted and that in view of all the circumstances tho endorsement of the report would bo sufficient.
The second case was a report by Mr G. Adamson (a member of the Executive) in connection with tho KokntaliiExcelsior match last Saturday, of an incident during the game in which Fraser (Excelsior) struck at Wallace (Kokatahi) during the play. Mr Adamson stated ho was close to the players at the time and saw the incident, and at half time referred the matter to the referoo who did not ape it. Wallace had stated that there was nothing in tho incident but be (Mr Adamson) felt it bis duty To" bring the matter forward as a warning. The Secretary. stated that Fraser bad been advised to be present, but had notified him that his work that night prevented him attend, jug. Mr D. Dowell (referee) was present, and stated he did not see the incident mentioned. The game was not a rough one, though there was much slipping, owing t : o the wet nature of the ground. Tho Committee resolved to thank M Adamson for his proper action in making th o report, and to ask Fraser to attend a meeting on Monday next at 7.15 p.m to give an explanation. The Committee further resolved that they considered tlie excessive number of accidents this season was caused by undue rough play, and too much playing of the man instead of the b'dl and express the hope that a more sportsmanlike spirit be shown in future games. Tho Committee then adjourned fill Monday next at 7.15 p.m. ■The team to represent Arahura against llimu on .Saturday at Arahura will be select?J from the following: Tnimii (5), Mason (3), Cunningham.
