The moons of Mars have been seen, probably for the first time, in Now /calami, and seen through the medium uf a New Zee land-made telescope. Usually the moons, w hich are not many miles in diameter, are seen only with the aid of poweiful telescopes. The instrument used on this occasion was made hv Mr Wind, director of tho Wanganui Olnoivatory, who recently made a telescope for Dunedin. The observers were Messrs G. M. Townsend and E. Hard, of Unworn, who used a magnification of 200 in a 12-itich re-tl-ctor.

Their Excellencies the Governor-Gen-eral and Lady Jollicoc, who have been on a brief visit to the Chatham Islands, returned to Wellington on Friday. The only other New Zealand Governors who have visited these islands were Lord Glasgow and laird Plunket. Tho death was reported yesterday morning at his residence at Cohden of Mr James llyiidmun. after a rather lengthy illliess. The deceased Who was 02 years of age. wil.s a native of Ross. He resided in Hokitika and Kumara for many years and in 1908 came to Cohden, where he has carried oil his occupation of ii'J'ner and contractor over since. At. the Supremo Court on Saturday when dealing with an appeal from the decision of the Warden, the point was ' raised of the status of the Mining Registrar. (Mr W. M. XVill). When Mr AYill came to take up the duties he was appointed by tho Warden as Acting Mining Registrar, hut his official appointment by Government had not followed ait once and it wan not till April that he received a notification of appointment ns Acting Mining Registrar. The Court held tint, as at December Ist there was no Alining Registrar aonointed, thoro could he no one acting for the Alining Registrar, and that therefore, the action taken in the case in question was not valid. The appeal against the decision of the Warden in granting the suit for cacellatfion of a timber area at Hokitika Gorg” made by the Acting Registrar, was therefore upheld.

Many friends throughout the district will hear with sorrow of the death of Mr William St. George, settler of Han Hai i, which took place yesterday at his homestead. The deceased who was a soil of Mr D. St. George former'y Chief Postmaster at Hokitika was a clerk prior to the war, when he joined up and served his country in Fiance. On his return he took up a farm 'ii tlari Hari Where lie lias since resided. Some months ago he suffered a. severe heart strain and lias been in failing health .ever since. Deceased was about 38 rears of age and leaves a wife (nee Miss Vida Perry), father, mother, and a number of brothers and sisters to

mourn their loss, to whom the deep sympathy of a wide circle of friends will lie extended. Tli o funeral takes place at Hokitika to-morrow. Arrangements are being made to give the deceas'd a unitary funeral.

There was a sensational runaway about noon, luckily without any serious injury resulting. A horse in a. spring cart owned by Mr Sherriff of Blue Spur standing in froilt of Messrs Laughton Bros simp hecbining startled by some mentis boiled down Weld Street. Two lads were in the vehicle at the time. The horse swerved into Tnncred Street close against Blank and Beremlt’s shop and travelled up the footpath passing between a telephone post and the building. The eart wn; damaged and the axle bent, while the fence suffered considerably. It was lucky indeed that the two lads escaped so easily. The impact with the fence made a great noise and these were soon a large number of onlookers gathered.
