The idea is to have the illustrated lectures depicting ihe scenery and industry of the district »lid thelV Is no doubt good results will follow. The venture which Dr Teichelinann made last year is a <a*e in po.nt of the remarkable success which can he made. Seine hundreds of people li'vaine interested in Westland on the East Coast and if the experi'raent were extended to other parts of New Zealand similar results would fol-l-'W. At Wellington for instance, especially during the session, a very opportune time would he afforded for a descent ou tin- North Island to attract a'tent ion to Westland. With the assistance of our Rnrliarnomanatis. special attention Miuld lie drawn to the occasion. and the lectures would draw overflowing attendances, Tliel'o Is A West,Coast community in Wellington, and through the good offices of that as-, sulfation, extra publicity could he se-! cured. The natural scenic eharlits of Westl: 'ini tire beyond eompfire, while if the possibilities of laud settlement and industrial expansion are advertised, very great good must result. The district has a wonderful opportunity opening up just now with the advent of the Midland railway, aitd the fullest list' .should he made of the occasion. The distrii t will neglect what is eertninly a '-olden opportunity if it fails to rise to the occasion in the matter of advertising the district and its attractive wares.
Thk liberality of a local townsman seems to render possible in the very near future a. memorial to Robert Burns, the well-known Scotch poet, in the shape of a statue of Hie ploughman poet whose work will delight posterity through all the ages, Of tile works of Burns it mav he said in the words of Milton:—
Thou, in our wonder and astonishment Hast built thyself a live-long monument.
The idea of a statue of llohct Burns as a local memorial is one to commend itself. There arc many towns o’er the world, where monuments are reared to the poet, testifying to liis worth and value. Here where, also, he has many admirers, it, would he quite a pnronria te and certainly pleasing to see a worth'.’ memorial reared. The project seems to he not difficult of noconiolishimr. as mere than one-third of the estimated cost is provided hv Mr William Patrick’s t>roferred liberality. Hokitika is hemming a town of many memorials. It is not unfitting that those memorials should fie connected with so historic a phu-e. The town is going te make gren* strides. R is the centv- of a d'stri' * where it can he made t'vn Hamilton of the South Island. It would he verv fitting therefore as onportunitv offers to seine all chances te improve and embellish the town in every desirable way. For that reason, we are houefu! of seeing tin l tnviispeonl'v -ml these of the district associate themselves in raising at lea-t E‘>!)o for the olviect. in view. In that wav the obie-t in view will In l attained (o the credit and honor of the town which will he a very fitting location for such a memorial a|,’ proposed.

Dairying in Sooth Westland is likely t" show a marked advance in the mining season. At tin' three dairying centres further “t rides will be made, with increased sunpliels and more numerous herds.
