In the annual Defence report to Parliament mention is made of the fact that there are still eighty-six men who were entitled to war gratuities ranging from £l6O downwards who have made no application for the money. We regret to record the death of Mr (:. 1 Saiissnunm, of BritUm Street, which took place this morning at his residence about 9 o'clock, after an illness extending over five weeks. The c'e.-eased w;o n native of Silesia and 66 vonrs of age-, lie ramo to New Zealand about 40 years ago with the German Hand, and settled here, having been a well-known resident of the town _ ever since. For many years he was Valuer for the Westland County Council, and filled a number of semi-public offices. Regarding matriculation examinations,''the Hon. C. J. Part- (Minister for Education), stated in Auckland that this year there were 4000 candidates, and the examinations were getting rather unwieldy. If it was good enough for the University to have internni examinations and degrees awarded <>n the reports of the professors, then it was good enough for some system of granting passes in matriculation cm the recommendation of a competent headaster. possibly assisted by an inspector. The headmaster knowbetter than anyone else who was entitled to go forward to the university. This would do away with the present overlapping and unwieldy system of matriculation examinations in this country.
Recent developments in tlie M’aihi mine at depth, particularly on the Edward roof, have been such that the future of the minimi industry on the; field looks distinctly brighter than for some vcars past. The operations which have disclosed these encouraging features, together with extensive exploratory work being carried on in other directions, have, however, involved the rompaii.v in such increased expenditure that latterly little or no margin of profit has remained from the mining and milling. Tn order to meet the high production costs, and to ensure a, margin of profit, the mnagement has decided to increase the monthly output. A start has been made to work the ftdl twenty-four hours with three shifts. Tt is understood that this will lead to the handling daily of an additional 100 tons of quartz which would increase the output by apnroximatelv 2100 tons for each fourweekly period.
