A FIRE. AUCKLAND, June 17. ;v fire last night destroyed a three storeyed bricking* building in Fort Street owned by H. O. Wills and occupied by H. O. AA’iils Ltd (Merchants), and Norden Coy. Ltd. (Dairy produce merchants). It originated in the basement where a largo amount of dairy produce was stored. The Fire Brigade prevented tile flames spreading to the upper parts of the building, though the ground floor was burned through nd a' pile of eases were precipitated below. Nordens stock in the building was insured for about £3.000. The stock was not damaged except by smoke and steam. The building was insured for £5.000 and Will's stock for £3360. These amounts are all in the United Office.

CLAIM FOR DAMAGES. HAMILTON, June 17

- A civil action to recover £2,000 damages for alleged negligence was commenced at the Supreme Court before Mr Justice Ilcrdman and a jury. The plaintiffs wore Elsie S. Sewer and another and the defendant Ellis and Burnand. The case arose out of damage done by a fire to plaintiff’s land near Ongafiui. The plaintiffs alleged the tires were caused by sparks from the defendants bush tram engines. The defence "as a denial of responsibility’ or alternately that if responsible the damages were grossly exaggerated. The case is proceeding.
