I UNIVERSITY CONTROL, j AUCKLAND, June 14. I Tile future of university control "its I referred to Ity the TTon. O'. J. -Parr in ii speech at the conferring of deuces. The question that would nave j to be settled very shortly, he said, was whether there should not be four independent colleges, which would conduct their examinations and confer degrees. In three of the centres the feeling was strong for independence as lar as the government of tin* colleges was concoined. N - daunt, if Auckland had « mdversity, people would give donations, benefactions, and gifts more generously than to the institution as part of tile New Zealand University. People might lu* induced to bring by a small rate direct limmeial assistance to the university. In regard to primary and secondary education, the Government should shoulder the whole responsibility. Mr Parr said he was sometimes tempted to ask what the university was doing for the community. The English universities claimed that they trained workers and leaders in industry, and by research work helped national industries and commerce, aidng more or less in the production of the national wealth. In New Zealand wo could claim that the professions wore well catered for by the university. When we harl some form of independent Government science would have its day in regard to industries. Certainly we might do something for agriculture. Tt should have boon done long ago. and might well ho done to-day.
