SEVERAL FIRES

TEAWAMUTU, June 10. A fire gutted a small block of wooden shops last night. The buildings were owned by J. Decode and occupied by Stite (painter) and Eeles Cov. (electrical engineers). Practically everything was destroyed. It is understood tile building was insured. The . contents were not insured. A. store at Tekawa, eight miles away, was burnt to the ground early in the week. It was owned by F. Bait rum and occupied by Stephen Clark. Bou wore insured. . «Three motor ears were burnt ui the neighbourhood during the week.

BLACKBERRY PEST.

VVAIROA, June 10.

Yesterday, a large representative meeting of settlers from all parts of tho district, passed a strongly worded 10solution demanding Government set up blackberry boards to take * immediate drastic stops to check and eradicate th< blackberry pest. Many thousand acres of splendid land is threatened with rum unless something is speedily done. Crown and native owners arc the worst offenders.

UNEMPLOYED PAN

CHRISTCHURCH June !>. A meeting of the North Canterbury Unemployment Committee was held today. A discussion took place on the quetion of the rates of pay to men placed on relief work. A motion in favour of union award rates wa negatived. A resolution was passed that the rate for married men should be 12s per day* and that fot* single men 10s.

CONVICTED OF ARSON. NAPIER, June 0. As a sequel to a series of outbreaks of fire at Hastings recently. Percy John Crawley and .Tames Moss were found guilty of arson at the Supreme Court Roth were recommended to mercy, and wore remanded for sentence. Neither had a good education, and the latter is below average mentality.
