WELLINGTON, Juiic IThe Dominion Council of the Sbvr Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association’s Land Committee recommended that as soldier settlers have undertaken obligations to the country, and are now asking concessions, it is therefore considered a fust and guiding principle that every soldier settler is morally bound to make all earliest endeavour to earrv out these obligations to the Very best" of his ability, so that the highest confidence may exist between the sol-dier-settler as n tenant and His common landlord, the‘Crown; that the Government be urged to deal with questions of the D.S.S. Act and its administration during the following season. The Committee affirmed the general principle of re-valuation. Some means should he devised to remove the present difficulties mkl remove the atniosphc:e of uncertainty and insecurity. Until icraluati .il tawes place, all rentals and iuteiest charges should he reviewed immediately so as to give the soldier-set-tiers a reasonable chance of rCtlliliinf their holdings, and that fdr this purpose a committee of three cortipet cut fanners in each Land District should put such policy into operation. Soldier-settlers should not be asked to pay rate on higher values than the adjoining owners on similar lands.
SHEEP DOG TRIADS
WHANGAREI, June 9
The North Island Sheep Dog Trials concluded in splendid weather. The huitlawav resulted : Hi Buckley's (l’u koroa) “Sheep” 39 points; W. G; Butloi’s (Opotiki) “Roy,” 38; C. Finlayson’s (Aponga). “York” 37. Tae championship cups were awarded ot the following;
Long head— .J. H. Butler’s (Opotiki) “King” 43 points. Short head. G. Paddison’s (Wanganui) “Toss” 62 points.
Huntaway.—H. Buckley’s (Pukeroa) ‘Sheep’’ 39 points.
Special exhihitons were given after the competitions. There was a very large pubic attendance. The visiting officials and contestants were eulogistic of the district’s hospitality, and the expressed opinion that it was the most successful meeting they ever attended.
THE HAMILTON SHOOTING. CROSSAX.IN COURT. HAMILTON, June 10. Detective Lambert, who was shot yesterday while arresting Crossnn for burglary, spoilt a comfortable night, and appeared quite blight this morning. He is still in a serious condition however.
A statement made by Detective Lambert, after his admission to the hospital, showed that when Jury (the motor driver) remarked the revolver was not loaded after it failed to discharge on the first occasion when pointed in the driver’s direction, Crossan fired a shot in the ground. The detective said two or three times—- •• Don’t he silly!” Crossan replied: ••I’m desperate! I don’t want to live!” He ordered the detective to “Stand off.” By this time the detective had reached within a yard of Crossan, and he made an effort to soring at Crossan and get the revolver. He managed to get hold of the barrel, lint. Crossan wrenched the weapon away. Lamliert made another attempt to grapple with Crossan, who then shot at tlie detective, hitting him in the stomach. Crossan a ppeared in the Police Court this morning, six charges being preferred against him : One of attempted murder, one of lieing in jKtssessioii of a revolver, one of presenting a revolver at Leo Jury, aitd three of breaking and entering. Accused was remanded for a week.
