[by telegraph—rEß press association] COUNTRY PARTY. AUCKLAND Juno 7. The proposed Country Party was discussed by the Farmers’ Conference today. Mr Poison (Dominion President) said the slogan of the Farmers’ Union was: “Principles and not parties.” He said the official view would he hostile to those forming the Country Party. The union, lie said, was also opposed to class representation at present. The farmers in New Zealand were organising as they never had before. There were branches being formed all over the Dominion. If the Union was to lie successful they must adhere to the platform and not take part in party politics. He asked the meeting not- to ship-wreck the union. Already ho It j received letters from valued memlters, > who said they would resign if the union , entered party polities. He was not there as a supporter of tiie Reform Gc- ’ vemment, but he asked would they gain anything by weakening the present Go- I vemment? They might do that with- 1 out gaining any benefit, for the farmers ns a whole. If they iiad a party, it was ’ no use trying to ho independent. It miist either oppose or support the present Government. He asked them to remember the danger of breaking up an organisation which was doing so much in the interests of farmers. 1 Some discussion ensued. I The conference, however, carried unanimously amid cheers, a motion ap-j probing of the action of the Auckland , Executive in forming the Country Party and reaffirming the decisions of two previous conferences to take political action to secure adequate recognition of the demands of the fanning community. CHRISTCHURCH, June 7. At the Supreme Court, Albert Cundy who stole a motor car. which lie sold ami who claimed to have won the D.C.M., appeared again before Mr Justice Adams, tho ease having been adjourned lor iiupiirics at Wellington as to whether there was any record in the navy list regarding a medal awarded to Cundy. To-day, the Crown Prosecutor said that a search had failed to find the name, and the Naval Secretary had stated that alterations had apparently been made on Cundy’s discharge. His Honour said that ho had an impression the discharge did not belong to Cundy. Prisoner was sentenced to 12 months’ hard labour, his Honour remarking that the sentence would have been heavier but for the appeal for leniency made liy the owner of the motor car. At tile Crown Prosecutor’s request, the discharge was impounded in order that the police could make further inquiries. William Withers who forged un engineer's certificate 20 years ago, was admitted to probation for 12 months. NAPIER, June 7. At the Supreme Court. William Alfred Robert Fosse], convicted on 10 charges of housebreaking, and theft and false pretences, was ordered four years’ reformative treatment.
