Horler (a carrier), motor of Waimate, smashing it to matchwood and carrying it some yards up the line. The passengers on the ♦rain heard the crash of the impact. Horler was thrown on to a patch of grass, hut was apparently injured. He evidently saw the train too late anti endeavoured to race to safety. ELECTROCUTED. DUNEDIN, June 8. Patrick Joseph Kearney, employed by tlie P. and T. Department, whilf shifting telephone wires at South Dunedin, evidently came in contact with a live wire and was electrocuted. A line of fifteen pounds was imposed on Charles, a millowner, for what the Magistrate described ns n shocking breach of the law, liv working a boiler for which the certificate had lapsed. Tt was stated in evidence by the Inspector of Machinery that the boiler for which the certificate had been ninety pounds , pressure, was being worked from 12-> to 140 pounds and that tbe safety valve was lashed down. The defence contended thalt this was customary in hush , mills.
