Hunting a Shark.
KINGSTON. (Jamaica), April 7
Air Frank Miehell-Hedges, the biggame hunter, who is fishing for marine monsters in these waters has just collie to the rescue of Kingston and rid the harbour of a huge “white’’ or man eating shark.
One evening last week. Aliss Adlin lope/., a L'iil ef If. was bathing ill the harbour with a little boy. when her father heard piercing dies of “Father, father!” coming up from the sea. He rushed to the beach all(l plunging into the water lifted the girl out and found I hat her l ight leg had been severed u’ose op to the hip. The girl died of her injuries the next day. •' After its attack on the girl the shark was sighted off the Sea Shore Gardens, and immediate attempts were made to calt.ii iv by means of books baited with huge pieces of beef and a dead dog. A clear view of the monster was obtained as it made for the dog, but a rifle aimed at the shark missed tire and the shark escaped.
Air A!ieh‘ll-1 feilges was then asked-to help. He laid down live buoys hearing steel , chains with huge hooks, baited with Alb fishes and two dead dogs. During the night the shark took the bait. The news spread like wildfire through the, city that one of the-buoys was slink ing and that the monster was hooked. Mr Alil'hell-Hedges and Air Owen, the harbour-master, were sent for,* and in the presence of 10,000 excited people the shark was dragged ashore. ‘ As it came alongside tlieilittfe pier the monster gave a convulsive snap of his jaws, completely buckling the great steel hook which bold it fast. The shark measured Oft. Gin. and weighed 7001 b.
