The total amounts of Customs duty collected at the various ports during the year were as follows : Auckland 1,565,780 Wellington 1,495,260 'Lyttelton 755,081 Dunedin 563,332 Napier 130 - 327 Invercalrgill 107,332 Wanganui 403,989 New Plymouth 66,105 Gisborne 64,000 Timaru 31 ,9 ?^ Greymouth 40.027 Nelson 33 - 864 Patea 19 ’ 413 Wairau and PictOn 14,757 Westport 9,741 Oamaru 8,812 Hokitika 4 > l6£> Tnurangn 1,350 Kaipara 29 ‘ The excise duties collected during the financial year were as follows: -Auckland, £112,480; Wellington £76,647; Lyttelton, £73,234; Dunedin, £148,722; other ports £107,385. The grand totals for the year were: Customs duties £5,035,451 ; excise duties £618,468.

The Board of Education upheld the action of Lewins, headmaster of Rotorua Public School, in objecting to religious instruction being given during school hours, these being under the control of the Board of Education, not of the School Committee.
